I have been poking around at ideas and new developments in alternative housing for a few years. I really love cob houses though, they seem so magical and fairy like.
Depending on the other materials used with cob (think tapia houses, but beautifully crafted) these homes can be very environmentally friendly.
I had envisioned a project- and really only artists can do this- several artists being trained to create these cob houses. Imagine about a group of 30 or so, all trained to build these homes. The material comes right from the topsoil of the very land it is being built on. Imagines the craftsmen, the wood workers, the glassmakers now for the doors and windows.
Imagine the model community, with the intent on being green. Recycled water, solar energy and a growing area to assist in feeding the little community. Imagine if you will now, those same artists running this community, with a large gallery etc to the front of the community where their items are sold. Maybe I am going too far... but a community of artists, built by artists- and lovely green spaces all around is the perfect place to germinate and nuture creative direction.
Of course the artists will have to work in conjunction with planners and engineers. All the interiors to these homes also are built with green materials. Conventional home it is not. But the environmental goodness can be seen from afar.
It would be a lovely project to work on, especially if at the end of it, those 30 artists will be living in the community themselves.......it may also solve housing problems for many if they can be trained in building their own...will it not?
