Discover the story of The Goddess Calypso, the powerful and alluring sea deity from Caribbean mythology. Learn about her legend, her powers and her influence in the culture of the region.

Calypso and Odysseuss - Arnold Bocklin Calypso is a name we here often on this island, but we never delve into its origins. I had cause to recently, as a Calypsonian has asked me to do a painting with the Goddess Calypso as the main theme. Calypso's most famous appearance (the goddess, not the music) is found in Homer's poem....Illyiad. She was a goddess, who was imprisoned on a tropical island because of her father's deeds. Odysseuss, champion in whatever he was seeking, washed up on her shores battered and bruised. There is more to the story with a love battle of itself between Calyspo and another goddess, but is isn't important to discovering the essence on the goddess herself. She and Odysseus fall in love and he remains on the island in that blissfull state for ten years. Her symbols are the crab and the dolphin. Art as social commentary

Getting into the realm of creating painting as social commentary is something I have been struggling with. My interest lie in the realm of spirituality, and the inability of individuals to truly accept other spiritual practices. I believe it is the reason fol lack of cohesiveness here as a people. Granted, there is an outward show of acceptance, but at home, in families; the indirect messages that are sent out are laced with fear and suspicion. I hear it when christian-faith based individual get together and comment about blood sacrifice in Orisa, or passing candles on a hike. The condescending manner, the invitation to condemn, the idea hovering in the air that somehow these practices are wrong. The pastor blaming other religious practices for the crime situation and lack of direction in the youth. The reluctance to learn and to understand. But I know that art as social commentary will also set the artist up for ridicule. People hate to see themselves in an unflattering light. Getting

Bamboo Cathedral - Chaguaramas, Trinidad West Indies -An Ecotourism Attraction in Chaguaramas, Trinidad

I documented the progression of this painting just for record keeping sake. We took a trip to the location to get some images to work with. It was a wet and rainy day, and I almost canceled. But the children were so eager to take this walk that I relented. On top of the rain, there were several fallen bamboo stalks (see top photo) But the pictures you take are really just for reference. Some creative license can be taken always. We took a walk all the way up to the Tracking station and got creeped out by the way the clouds were rolling in. Jordan said it could pass for a scene from a horror movie, and the kids joked about seeing zombies come up from the bushes....LOL So here is the painting. No words needed. The final is at the end.
