TWO Caribbean Artists to know at ART BASEL 2023

CUBA to Paris :  Agustín Cárdenas

Cuban sculptor Agustín Cárdenas creates totemic sculptures depicting the human form. He Completed his studies in Havana in the late 1940s, and then he moved to Paris in 1955.

It was here he befriended the poet André Breton and became part of his Surrealist circle. His practice was also deeply influenced by African carvings, the work of Henry Moore and the work of Constantin Brâncuși.  Édouard Glissant, French Poet,  once said of his work :  ‘sculpture which does not merely fill up space, but trembles with it.’ Galerie Mitterrand will show a series of his historic works from the 1950s and 1960s, including a striking burnt-wood sculpture inspired by his African roots.

Julien Creuzet, Artist - Julien hails from Martinique

Born in 1986, Julien Creuzet is a French-Caribbean artist who lives and works in Paris. A visual artist and poet, he actively intertwines these two practices via amalgams of sculpture, installation and textual intervention that frequently address his own diasporic experience. Inspired by the poetic and philosophical reflections of Aimé Césaire and Édouard Glissant on creolization and migration, Creuzet’s work focuses on the troubled intersection of the history of Martinique and the events of European modernity.

Not a criticism…..just always noticing that Caribbean Artists who were born AND still reside in the Caribbean never seem to get much exposure.

I am yet to see a magazine review artists who live and work in the Caribbean….
