WHAT IS OBEAH REALLY?
Most think its evil. Lets walk down that trail for a bit and I will tell you what I found.
So I began reading about obeah sometime last year. I seem to have this obsession with spiritual paths that I have been told were evil. I like to read about their teachings and symbols and history to figure out for myself what EXACTLY is evil about them.
What I have found with most is that the narrative we get about these other spiritual paths comes mostly from the good Christian folk, and the things the colonists/church instilled in them about the Spiritual Paths/Religions in the quest to conquer the world. This information is passed down the generations, and has come to be seen as truth. Sometimes you have to go to waaaaaaaayyyyy back before the host country was colonized to really get some sense of what the ACTUAL Original practice was.
It was difficult to do that for obeah. There is no agreed consensus on where the documented-pre-slavery-records are. There is an Igbo term, which refers to a benevolent force called “abia.”
